Christmas Cake Balls Recipe

The holiday season wouldn't be complete without a delicious and festive treat, and these Christmas cake balls are the perfect addition to your holiday baking repertoire. This recipe delivers moist, flavorful cake balls dipped in rich chocolate and adorned with festive sprinkles – a delightful combination that's guaranteed to impress your family and guests.

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1 box (15.25 ounces) white cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs

For the Chocolate Coating:

  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup shortening (optional, for a smoother, shinier coating)

For Decoration:

  • Christmas sprinkles (various colors and shapes)
  • Red and green sugar crystals (optional)

Instructions:

Baking the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  3. Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Crumbling and Forming the Cake Balls:

  1. Once the cakes are completely cool, crumble them into a large bowl.
  2. Important: Make sure there are no large chunks remaining. The crumbs should be relatively fine and consistent.
  3. Gradually add frosting (your preferred recipe or store-bought), mixing until a dough-like consistency forms. You may need to adjust the amount of frosting to achieve the desired consistency. The mixture should be pliable enough to roll into balls without crumbling.
  4. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls.

Coating the Cake Balls:

  1. Melt the chocolate chips and shortening (if using) in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely smooth.
  2. Insert a toothpick into each cake ball.
  3. Dip each cake ball into the melted chocolate, ensuring it's fully coated.
  4. Gently tap the toothpick against the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
  5. Place the coated cake balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Decorating and Setting:

  1. Immediately sprinkle the cake balls with your chosen Christmas sprinkles and/or sugar crystals.
  2. Refrigerate the cake balls for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate to set completely. This step is crucial for maintaining their shape and preventing melting.

Serving and Storage:

These Christmas cake balls are best served chilled. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Tips and Variations:

  • For a richer flavor, use a chocolate cake mix instead of white.
  • Add festive extracts like peppermint or almond to the cake batter.
  • Get creative with your decorations! Use different colored sprinkles, edible glitter, or even drizzle melted white chocolate over the top.
  • You can also use different types of chocolate for the coating, such as dark chocolate or milk chocolate.

Enjoy these delightful Christmas cake balls and happy holidays!
